In which I Fall Victim to a Marketing Scheme

Because I don’t like to clean as much as I like to write posts on this here blog and other blogs as well, I bought one of these.

Installation was a snap. Retail is about $20 but here’s a coupon for $5 off. So far so good. I’ve put it in the kids’ bathroom because, frankly, they don’t clean the bathroom as often as I’d like or as well as I’d like so, rather than getting all martyr-ish and bemoaning the time I have to spend scrubbing it, this is my solution. I’ll give you an update in a couple of weeks and let you know if it really works.

  1. Check out Consumer Reports’ analysis of that shower cleaner. They concluded:

Eight of 11 panelists said their showers showed no improvement or were somewhat worse (the 12th couldn’t comment, because it wouldn’t hang on her vertical showerhead). The device missed some areas. Just to check its range, one person lined her stall floor with newspaper, which became wet in only one spot, directly under the cleaner. Another complaint: It left spots, streaks, or stickiness on walls and shower doors. Two panelists said the cleaner worked pretty well; one thought it was so-so. But for most, it was no-go.

I’m not sure you’re doing yourself any favors here. :)

I am pretty much resigned to the “it’s better than nothing” school of thought and my expectations are still somewhat low. It’s not like I never want the boy and the girl to scrub that tub again; I just want the in-between periods of whole school semesters or summer breaks that they would let pass without cleaning have some sort of chemical advantage, thus reducing the cloud of mildew they would happily exist in if I didn’t suit up and go in there with the bleach hose once in awhile.
It’s pretty ghastly, what kids will live with if you let them.

I’m so glad you bought one, because I’ve always wondered how good it was. Do you have a tub/shower combo or just a shower? I wondered if it worked with shower curtains. Because, you know, watching that commercial makes that stream of cleaner look like it would blast right through a curtain! Good luck!
