Now, you either love them or hate them, those Geico commercials featuring cavemen living in a modern world. For me, they never fail to give me a chuckle, or a the very least, a smile.

But this? This could be very good news.

What’s that? You don’t LIKE the cavemen? You think they’re STUPID? Well . . .

I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now.

  1. I think the cave guy is hillarious.

Don’t know why. The writing is tuned into my funny bone frequency, and that actor delivers with all sincerity and without going over the top.

    Loves the cavemen.

Cannot IMAGINE this as a sitcom, though.

For the most part, I’m getting really sick of ads that have NOTHING to do with their product. The first cavemen bit was a great ad, the second wasn’t bad either I guess, but as they keep cranking them out it get’s further away from what is actually being advertised. Now the only information we get from a cavemen ad is that Geico is racist and that it’s funny. How is that good advertising?

I loved the gecko. That worked. It got the name out there in a funny way and created a funny character that people liked. It also tended to find ways of bringing it back to car insurance. They had plenty of adds that didn’t talk about car insurance at all, but they were usually inbetween ones that did.

The problem with cavemen as a show is that its a gimmick that has pretty much already worn thin with the ads. Ads are often not much longer than a minute. Does anyone really think they can keep this gimmick fresh and not painfully predictable when facing 20 minute episodes? They could do some funny things with this, but I’m expecting it to be a one season run. Sorry.

What’s interesting to me is that Geico has continued to run the gecko ads and the celebrity storyteller ads (the ones with Little Richard, Vern Troyer, etc.) at the same time as the caveman campaign. I don’t think anyone expects the sitcom idea to be more than that — if it lasts past the pilot I’ll eat my words but no, it doesn’t have enough to it to be a success . . . but then again, it’s not any worse an idea than a dozen other weak sitcoms that persist.

Of course, I’m still going to watch just because I can’t get enough of the exasperated eye-rolling perfection of the caveman.

Oh man, I forgot about those. Not one of my favorite moments in TV advertising either.
