Movies that Stop You
Everyone has a few — movies they’ll stop and watch when they catch them on TV; even if it’s a beautiful sunny day outside; even though they have TiVo; even though they may even own the movie on DVD.
Here are some of mine:
- Stripes
- Any of the Godfather movies
- The Blues Brothers
- Napoleon Dynamite
- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
What are yours?
Movies that can’t be watched twice? Anything by M. Night Shyamalan.

Oh, YES to Shawshenk. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen it. “Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’.”

Ferris Bueller gets me every time. Also, the Princess Bride.
I won’t watch any of the newer Star Wars movies again or the Lord of the Rings Trilogy or anything with Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson.

Harold and Maude. I know that’s not your standard classic (more like cult classic!) but it’s my favorite movie.
Didn’t you want to watch The Sixth Sense again after you had seen the ending? I’ve definitely watched that more than once.

Oh, totally Braveheart and A League of Their Own. The latter is a movie I will absolutely never pass by. And I cry when the telegram boy comes in, every damn time. Agree 100% on Shawshank, too.

Michelle — yes . . . There’s no crying in baseball! I’m with you. And Susan — ya gotta love Hugh Grant — not the Monsanto president, but he’s great, too — how about in About a Boy? That one kills me, too.

The Godfather I & II (not III - it was awful!), Chicago, Gone With The Wind, An American In Paris, Peyton Place and…my totally guilty pleasure…Steel Magnolias (can’t help it - I’m Southern, so it’s required!).
And I’m with ya, Jennifer - I’ve got my own personal boycott of Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson movies in full gear - can’t change the channel fast enough if one of them appear on my TV!
