Four Fried Pickles Equals Heaven on Earth

I almost forgot to tell you — for lunch today, I had my favorite lunch ever. This particular lunch is only found (in my world) at the airport in Charlotte, N.C. Since only luck and circumstance have me at the airport in Charlotte around lunch or dinnertime, it is not often that I get to have this much-loved meal. When I view my travel itinerary and see that I’ll be in Charlotte around noon, I dance with glee and anticipate lunch for days.

See how boring I am?

The lunch of which I speak is at the Carolina Pit Barbecue joint in the main terminal. Today, I SPRINTED from my plane which entered at an entirely different terminal than my upcoming departure. With joy, I saw that it was impossible to get from point A to point B without passing through the main terminal and therefore procuring my BBQ. Time was short, with just 45 minutes between landing and departure.

I got to the restaurant and with dismay, noted the line. I charmed my way in front of an indecisive guy and ordered the revered pulled pork sandwich. Now, at Carolina Pit, when you order a sandwich, they give you a fried pickle. The fried pickle is the only reason I look forward to traveling. Heaven on Earth, I tell ya! I dream of fried pickles. After begging the counter gal to put my sandwich in a salad box “to go,” I said, “Boy, I sure do like your fried pickles.”

And she gave me four. FOUR.

And then I SPRINTED off to my gate where my plane was already beginning to board. Happy as a pig in a smoker, (wait; that’s not very happy for the pig) I sat on the plane to Miami chompin’ down my fried pickles and thinking about how much I love that darn airport in Charlotte, N.C.

Phill and I used to say that a vacation really started after we had pulled pork barbeque. It would have been a very good start to a vacation with a fried pickle. Yum.

A couple of places in STL have fried pickles and they are heavenly. Tom and I go places to eat just because we have a hankerin’ for the fried pickles.

    Are yours whole pickles?

  3. marijean Says:

They’re spears — about a quarter of a pickle each. Have you had them as slices or wholes?

You’re one of THOSE? By THOSE, I mean the air travelers who purchase their meal and then manage to stink up the entire airplane with the spicy/smelly/sickeningly-sweet stench of their meals? Granted, I don’t know how fried pickles smell…

First time I’ve done it so, yeah, I guess I’ve crossed over to the dark side.

At least it’s not McDonald’s stench.

Oh my goodness, my mouth is watering just reading this - I LOVE fried pickles, and I’ve had a hard time finding them anywhere outside Razorback country.

Zuzu, where in STL can I go stuff myself with some Southern-fried heaven?

I have found great fried pickles at O’Leary’s (Sunset Hills) STL. It is close to ToysRUs. As a side bar- John Goodman is part owner.
They are slices…..I hope you enjoy them.

John Goodman’s restaraunt in South St. Louis County (O’Leary’s) is the only place I’ve ever seen fried pickles. They are served like chips in small breaded slices and dipped in a ranch/salsa dip.

    DE-Vine!

IMO, sliced-n-fried are the only way to go. The spear is just too, too.

But maybe that’s just me. Really, fried pickle of any kind trumps no fried pickle.

  10. Maria Says:

Fired pickles– not so much. But I’ll eat fried okra any day.

  11. Michelle Golden Says:

HA! I came from my reader to the blog JUST to ask if the pickles were like O’Leary’s! I see some fellow St Louisans beat me to it. O’Leary’s had an unfortunate fire and while they were remodeling, I had serious fried pickle withdrawals!

I think I’d love to try 1/4 spears as an alternative to the thin but oh-so-crispy chips, though. Yum.

After reading this article, I had a hankerin’ for fried pickles, but didn’t have time to go down to O’Leary’s, so my hubby and I made our own. I have to say, THEY WERE DELICIOUS!!!!!! Check out: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Fried-Dill-Pickles/Detail.aspx
