Lunch with a Life Coach

No, no. Not MY life coach. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Although I didn’t used to feel that way. In fact, I remember quite clearly the first time I ran into someone I knew who turned to his lunch companion and introduced her as his “life coach.” “Loser,” I thought, because I used to be judgemental like that sometimes and also, because I’d met with this guy enough to have previously formed that opinion for other reasons. Anyway, that was 1997 or so and the professional coaching trend was new. Oh, and I was a kid who didn’t know anything. That, too.

Yesterday, (10 years later), I had lunch with a friend and referral source whose business it is to coach leaders and executives as well as help organizations with their strategic business plans. Lucky for me, she brought her coaching skills to the table, and helped me think through some challenges and goals on my plate.

A few years ago I would have felt strange about seeking professional help for my career. Now, though, it seems foolish not to go get the best help you can find, to allow you to be the best you can be.

Would you use a life coach? Have you? Why or why not?

We had an educational session at work yesterday about coaching people and being better managers. I would certainly use a life coach, although I haven’t found one yet.

I began Life Coaching last year and find I learn as much from my
clients as I have to give them.
If you are not living the life you want perhaps you are asking for
too many material things and it is time to detach yourself from
NEED and search for WANT instead.
I would be happy to talk with you by e mail

Oh my. . . now for the true confessions time. Yes, I’ve had a life coach and although I’m not currently in a client/coach relationship with her, she has been very important person in my life. In fact, I blogged about her a couple of weeks ago. Suffice it to say that she’s done a good job of seeing possibilities that I couldn’t and keeping me accountable for my choices. Yes, a life coach. . who would have “thunk” it!!

I actually did use a life coach after having Princess #2, realizing that full-time work with two Princesses was too much for me, and going through a total meltdown crisis “what do I do now?”kind of thing. The coach helped me figure out what would work best for my family and my employer (Standing Partnership shout-out here - the place rocks!), and a year later, I’m absolutely loving my part-time position and life with my royal brood again. It totally worked for me.
