What I’ve Been Reading: The Other Boleyn Girl

I’m not going to bore you with the long list of business books I’ve been absorbing over the last few months. What I do want to tell you is that I’ve been completely waylaid by The Other Boleyn Girl. My sister sent it to me for my birthday and I have not been able to put it down. I’ll warrant that at the beginning I thought, this is the closest to a romance novel as I’ve gotten since I filched my sister’s Danielle Steele novels when I was a kid. Actually, though, it’s historical fiction and therefore a world apart from the likes of the Fabio-enhanced novels my grandmother favored.

It’s a good thing I had much time this weekend for curling up in the papasan chair with my book; at 672 pages it’s a commitment for which you want to have time for continuous reading. Or, if you like, you can just wait for the movie (starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson).

I liked The Other Boleyn Girl too, and right after I finished, PBS did a masterpiece theater about Henry VIII with Helena Bonham-Carter playing Anne Boleyn.

I love Helena Bonham Carter (who had the most appallingly funny line in a movie ever in Fight Club). She certainly makes strange choices in her film career. Maybe PBS will resurrect it when the movie comes out in Feb.

I’m reading that now as well (indulging my Elizabethan history obsession), and I absolutely love it. So excited to hear they’re making a movie out of it - I’m predicting Natalie Portman will totally nail the title role - love her!

Hey, I’m reading that too! It’s help me satisfy my Tudors-fancy! Ah, how I love JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS. He’s beautiful, and plays an amazing Elvis too ;) Care to check it out (it’s hot I tell you!: http://www.sho.com/site/tudors/home.do?source=shocom_nav?paidsearch=snipsgoogle.

I prefer the Italian royal intrigue, specifically Medici, Renaissance era. But since you lived it, I may have to pick it up!

Weird! I read it on the flight home today.

OMG, I loved that book. I hardly have time to read anymore, much less (like you) fiction, but it is a great one. Also read the related story, “The Virgin’s Lover” by Ms. Gregory, too.

Enjoy! And when you’re done, you’ll want more…
