The boy turns 18 today. The man? No, I don’t think so. Regardless of his voting eligibility and the draft card in his wallet, for me, he will remain the boy.

The husband said, “We’ve raised a child.”

Wait, whoa, hold on a minute, I think, have I remembered to teach him everything I should have? Have I armed him with enough information to keep him happy, healthy and secure into adulthood. Probably not.

A commercial came on for one of those rent-to-own joints. I told the boy never to rent anything to own; that it’s a ripoff. Apparently I’ve made this point before.

“If there’s anything you guys have taught me, it’s that,” he said wryly (I think).

We send our son off into the world an adult who, if nothing else, will never rent-to-own a piece of furniture or a television.

And that’s all he needs to know… :)

  2. Yep, I’d have to agree. I remember my parents pounding that into my brain before I moved out. This is why all of my furniture is near 100 years old!

    Heh. (:

Does he really have a draft card? I never got a draft card. Am I in trouble?

You’ve raised a child. What an amazing concept. While I wouldn’t say your work is done, it’s still something to ponder.

Stanley — you may have gotten an envelope from the Selective Service just before your 18th birthday. It doesn’t look much different than junk mail, so you may have thrown it out. I’m not sure how important it is to have, but we’re making the boy carry his in his wallet. It seems like a throwback to another era but I think we owe it to those who were drafted, and who served to honor the card, no matter how we feel about the practice. Wow, that was a lecture. Didn’t mean that. Go get a draft card. :)

    Uh-oh. I wonder if I’m non-compliant with the Selective Service System. I think I’m okay. I remember registering; I just don’t recall there being a card. I wonder if that’s new….

    Thanks for the explanation!
